COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

1. COUNTABLE NOUNS

Countable nouns are things that we can count individually.

We can use numbers with them:

1 apple
2 apples
3 books
5 students
10 eggs

Countable nouns have singular and plural forms.

Examples:

apple → apples
banana → bananas
book → books
chair → chairs
egg → eggs
student → students
bottle → bottles

With singular countable nouns

We can use:

a / an + singular noun

Examples:

a banana
a book
a chair
an apple
an egg
an orange

Remember:

A → before a consonant sound
AN → before a vowel sound

Examples:

a pencil
a house
an apple
an orange

We can also use many with plural countable nouns.

Examples:

There are many students.
I have many books.
She has many friends.

2. UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Uncountable nouns are things that we cannot normally count individually.

They usually do not have a plural form.

Examples:

water
milk
rice
sugar
salt
bread
cheese
coffee
tea
juice
money

We do NOT normally say:

❌ two waters
❌ three milks
❌ five rices
❌ two breads

Instead, we use containers or measurements:

a glass of water
two bottles of water
a cup of coffee
three bags of rice
a piece of bread
two pieces of cheese

Important!

Countable:

one apple → two apples

Uncountable:

water → a glass of water

3. COUNTABLE OR UNCOUNTABLE?

COUNTABLE

We can count them:

apple
egg
banana
chair
book
student
car
dog
bottle

Examples:

one apple
two apples
three eggs

UNCOUNTABLE

We cannot normally count them individually:

water
milk
rice
sugar
salt
cheese
bread
money
coffee
juice

Examples:

some water
some rice
some milk

4. SOME

We use SOME mainly in affirmative sentences.

We can use some with:

plural countable nouns

and

uncountable nouns

Examples:

I have some apples.
There are some books on the table.
She has some friends.
There is some milk in the fridge.
We need some sugar.
I want some water.

Structure:

SOME + plural countable noun

Some apples
Some books
Some eggs

SOME + uncountable noun

Some water
Some rice
Some milk

5. ANY

We use ANY mainly in negative sentences and questions.

Negative sentences

I don't have any money.
There aren't any apples.
She doesn't have any brothers.
There isn't any milk.
We don't have any rice.

Questions

Do you have any money?
Are there any apples?
Is there any milk?
Do we have any eggs?
Are there any students in the classroom?

Structure:

ANY + plural countable noun

Any apples
Any books
Any eggs

ANY + uncountable noun

Any water
Any milk
Any sugar

6. SOME VS. ANY

AFFIRMATIVE → SOME

There are some apples.

There is some milk.

I have some money.

NEGATIVE → ANY

There aren't any apples.

There isn't any milk.

I don't have any money.

QUESTIONS → ANY

Are there any apples?

Is there any milk?

Do you have any money?

THERE IS - THERE ARE + COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE

We use there is to talk about one thing. ( Usamos there is para hablar de una cosa)

Examples:

·       There is a bed in the bedroom.( hay una cama en la habitación)

·       There is a sofa in the living room.( hay un sofa en la sala de estar)

·       There is a table in the dining room. ( hay una mesa en el comedor)

We use there are to talk about two or more things.(usamos there are para hablar de dos o más cosas)

Examples:

·       There are two chairs in the kitchen.( hay dos sillas en la cocina)

·       There are four windows in the house. ( hay cuatro ventanas en la casa)

·       There are three books on the desk.( hay tres libros en el escritorio)

 There is y there are significan " Hay " there is es singular y there are plural.

Uncountable:

4. SOME

We use SOME with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns.

Countable:

1.some apples
2.some eggs
3.some bananas

Uncountable:

1.some rice
2.some milk
3.some cheese

Examples:

3.There is some milk in the fridge.
