1. Present Simple

When do we use it?

We use the Present Simple to talk about:

·       Daily routines

·       Habits

·       Facts

·       Permanent situations

·       Schedules

Structure

Affirmative

·       Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he, she, it)

Examples:

·       I study English every day.

·       She works at a hospital.

·       They play soccer on Saturdays.

Negative

·       Subject + don't/doesn't + base verb

Examples:

·       I don't like coffee.

·       He doesn't watch TV.

Questions

·       Do/Does + subject + base verb?

Examples:

·       Do you live in Colombia?

·       Does she speak French?

Time expressions

·       Always

·       Usually

·       Often

·       Sometimes

·       Never

·       Every day

·       On Mondays

 

2. Present Continuous

When do we use it?

We use the Present Continuous for:

·       Actions happening now

·       Temporary situations

·       Future arrangements

Structure

Affirmative
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Examples:

·       I am studying.

·       She is cooking.

·       They are playing.

Negative
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing

Examples:

·       He isn't sleeping.

·       We aren't working.

3. Past Simple

When do we use it?

We use the Past Simple for:

·       Finished actions in the past

·       Events with a specific time

Regular verbs

·       watch → watched

Irregular verbs

·       go → went

·       eat → ate

·       see → saw

·       have → had

Affirmative

Subject + past verb

Examples:

·       I visited my grandmother.

·       She went to school.

Negative

Subject + didn't + base verb

4. Past Continuous

When do we use it?

We use the Past Continuous for:

·       An action in progress at a specific moment in the past.

·       Two actions happening at the same time.

·       A longer action interrupted by a shorter one (usually in the Past Simple).

Examples:

·       I was studying.

·       They were playing.

Negative
Subject + wasn't/weren't + verb-ing

Examples:

·       She wasn't sleeping.

When do we use it?

6. Be Going To

When do we use it?

We use be going to for:
