2 .COMPARATIVES

Good morning my dear students, today we are going to continue with the comparatives.

Let's continue:

2. How to Form Comparatives

A. One-syllable adjectives
Add -er to the adjective.
If the adjective ends in e, just add -r.
If it ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC), double the final consonant and add -er.
Examples:
  • tall → taller
  • nice → nicer
  • big → bigger
  • hot → hotter
B. Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y
Change the -y to -i and add -er.
Examples:
  • happy → happier
  • busy → busier
  • easy → easier
C. Adjectives with two or more syllables (not ending in -y)
Use more before the adjective.
Examples:
  • beautiful → more beautiful
  • expensive → more expensive
  • interesting → more interesting

3. Than: The Word We Use to Compare
We usually use than after a comparative to show what is being compared.
Examples:
  • She is smarter than her brother.
  • This restaurant is more popular than the other one.

4. Irregular Comparatives
Some adjectives don’t follow the rules. Here are the most common ones:

good

better

bad

worse

far

farther/further

Examples:
  • My grade is better than last term.
  • This test was worse than the last one.
